I'm a Christian, but I'm not getting anywhere with this...

According to a Gallup Poll, one-third of all adults identify themselves as being Christians. However, these statistics are not reflected in the life of our nation. Christians are to be the salt and light of the world, yet there is little evidence of it's influence anymore. Likewise, maybe you feel that your religious life seems to have no real effect upon your life. Maybe you go to church regularly, or maybe not. Maybe you read the Bible or maybe it seems boring. Prayer? Do you secretively think that a prayer is as effective as making a wish? What has gone wrong?

Yes, we may have a problem... a very serious problem.

In the book of Acts, the Philippian jailer asked Paul what he must do to be saved, Paul did not respond, “Accept Jesus as your Savior.” Rather he said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved” (Acts 16:31, emphasis added). People are saved when they believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Mind you, they are not saved just because they believe a doctrine about salvation or a doctrine about Jesus, but when they believe in a person—the Lord Jesus Christ. That is saving faith. Too many think because they believe that Jesus’ death was a sufficient sacrifice for their sins, or a hundred other things about Jesus or salvation, that they have saving faith. But they don’t. The devil believes all those things about Jesus and salvation. Saving faith consists of faith in Jesus.

And who is He?

In the book of Revelation, Jesus says, "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."

Alexander Maclaren says concerning this passage, "Who knocks? The exalted Christ. What is the door? This closed heart of man. What does He desire? Entrance. What are His knockings and His voice? . . . whatsoever sways our hearts to yield to Him and enthrone Him."

Francis Assisi said, "God is always courteous and does not invade the privacy of the human soul."

And this means....what?

To know the person of Jesus is not just something that happens. No one who is married got in that position just because they saw a person and said "I do." There is a relationship with an individual that had to be cultivated. If you are reading this, it is because you have heard Jesus knocking at the door of your heart. You might not have realized it, but that feeling of "there must be more to life" is that knock. The question now is, "Will you let Him in? Will you eat with Him?"

In other words, to allow God into your life and to have fellowship with Him means that you become a follower or disciple of Jesus Christ. It means that you learn to cultivate your relationship with Him by knowing, not only His word (the Bible), but also experiencing His presence (the Holy Spirit) and hearing His voice. By experiencing the reality of a real and living person of Jesus Christ, you find that life is "going somewhere."
